Flickly ran a single-wave quantitative online survey of qualified current sunscreen and SPF users in India in 2026. The instrument covered category behaviour, brand funnels, trust drivers and breakers, label comprehension, loyalty and willingness to pay. Coverage was national, spanning the largest metropolitan markets alongside Tier 1/2 cities in north and south India.

The great majority of this sample applies sunscreen daily or on most days. It represents the engaged, metro-skewed core of the category, not the light or lapsed user.

The two measures barely move together. The correlation is statistically significant and substantively weak, so confidence here is a poor proxy for knowledge.

The mechanism is structural. A label states its benefit in two unrelated notation systems: A numeric SPF value for UVB, and a plus-sign PA grade for UVA, which is why broad-spectrum protection is so often misread as a single number. Neither can be verified at the point of use, because protection is the absence of an outcome rather than the presence of one. A user who does not burn concludes the product worked. A user who tans concludes it failed. Nothing in that loop teaches label literacy, and the most committed users are not exempt.

Influencer advocacy and introductory pricing, which dominate Indian beauty launch calendars, are named as the origin of trust by only a small minority.

The proof asset buyers most want on the pack is a dermatologist association seal: a demand for a third-party signature on skincare packaging, not a brand claim.

Trust in a sunscreen brand breaks on the body, not on the label. A personal adverse reaction such as irritation or breakouts is the most damaging single event in the study, and a majority say it would severely damage or end the relationship with the brand.

The second failure is the visible one. The largest single source of doubt is getting tanned or burnt despite using the product correctly, the everyday version of the question of why sunscreen fails to protect. Confusing labelling ranks second and distant, with complaints about texture and oiliness close behind it.

It originates in Japan, is measured by the persistent pigment darkening method, and indicates a UVA protection factor of sixteen or higher.
